Capcom is on a roll with reviving the Resident Evil series, from the monstrous Lady Demutrescu in Resident Evil Village to remaking the classics; there's something to appeal to hardened fans and newcomers alike!
Resident Evil 4 was released as a ground-up remake of the original survival horror game. Players control Leon Kennedy on a journey to rescue the US president's daughter, Ashley Graham, from a religious cult in a secluded European village. Set years after the Raccoon City incident, players see Leon's true potential as he has matured significantly and blossomed from a rookie cop to a battle-hardened special agent working directly for the US president.
Every aspect of the classic game has been updated to suit the current generation, from the modernized graphics and intense action scenes to the reimagined storyline to surprise even hardened fans. Here are some tips and tricks to help you survive your time with the Las Plagas in the Resident Evil 4 remake.
The Ganado worship Saddler with only madness in their eyes. Unlike zombies in the previous Resident Evil games, the Ganado retain their intelligence. Despite being possessed by parasites, they can attack in coordinated attacks and clump together in groups. This means that you have to work on thinning out the crowd.
Ammo is scarce in Resident Evil 4, and enemies are plentiful! To combat this, aim at your opponent's knees to send them staggering. New to the remake is the melee attack, where Leon sends enemies flying with a roundhouse kick. This is great for crowd control, as kicked opponents can stagger other enemies behind them.
Unlike the original game, the knife does not have unlimited uses - it must be repaired by the Merchant when it breaks. Do not use the knife all willy-nilly to slice opponents! Parrying attacks or finishing stunned enemies uses the least durability, so save it for these scenarios or for stealth attacks.
Resident Evil 4 offers many gun options - it can be easy to get overwhelmed! Our best advice is to ensure you always have a handgun in your inventory, whether the starting SG-09R or the Red9.
Handguns are the backbone of Leon's arsenal; the ammo is cheap to craft in a game focused on resource management, and the ammo for it is plentiful. Always make sure you upgrade your handgun to be as powerful as possible.
Speaking of handguns, the Red9 pistol is a fantastic weapon and worth getting if you can remember to do so. Jump into the lake raft in Chapter 4 after killing the Del Lago lake monster. Head to the middle of the lake, where you should come across an old boat with a treasure chest. Inside you will find the glorious Red9 gun!
Resource management is one of the hardest things to get to grips with in Resident Evil games. Make sure to organize your attache case whenever you have a spare moment. This will allow you to maximize your inventory space before saving up Pesetas for case upgrades.
Along the way, you may pick up herbs to boost your Health. Green herbs refill your health bar, while Red herbs are useless on their own but enhance the effects of the Herb they are combined with. Yellow herbs are the rarest of all and increase your maximum Health when consumed. Mix any spare herbs in your inventory wherever possible to save space and maximize your health gains. If you have gunpower and resources to spare, make sure you keep crafting yourself more ammo.
The Merchant has special wares, some of which cost tons of Pesetas (the in-game currency). The best way of getting money is by selling treasure. You may find Gemstones along the way - it may be tempting to sell these on their own, but wait to do so.
You can inlay Gemstones into treasures with empty slots, like an Ornate necklace or Elegant Crown, to get extra money. Not only that but there are certain Gemstone bonuses and multipliers from certain combinations. For example, five gemstones of different colors grant you a 2.0 multiplier bonus for selling your treasure.
Test them out yourself to see how much you can make - there's even an achievement for selling an item worth more than 100K Pesetas!
Always make sure you have a Flash Grenade or two in your pocket! These handy pocket bombs will stun regular enemies, which is great. But they are most effective on anyone infected with the Las Plagas parasite. These grotesque creatures are either killed with one Flash Grenade, or they take lethal damage ready for Leon to finish them off.
Use them to your advantage, lure enemies in an open space or confined room, pop one Flash Grenade and watch the chaos unfold!
This secluded European village is full of hazards, like bear traps, tripwires, and explosives. If you want to remove the danger, you can crouch-walk up to them and deactivate them by hand.
However, if you like to live life on the edge, you can lure any villagers chasing you into traps to conserve ammo. For example, enemies caught in a bear trap will be staggered as they try to escape, allowing for a quick melee attack to finish them off.
The Merchant will often leave specific special request notes near his hideouts. These can range from killing plague-infested rats to shooting down Blue Medallions. Completing his requests will reward you with Spinels, which can be traded for special items like Treasure Maps, elusive Yellow Herbs and even special weapons!
Make sure to scour every room and area. There could be drawers or cupboards you have missed with valuable resources or ammo inside. Sometimes, you will need specific keys to open locked boxes, but remember you can always double back later if you cannot open it right now. The Merchant will warn you if you are approaching a progression area that will prevent you from returning.
In the Resident Evil 4 remake, Leon can also now break open yellow boxes and barrels with a swift kick. These usually contain Green herbs, gunpowder, or essential ammo, so don't miss any!
While searching for Ashley, you may see fish in the lake or chickens running around the villager. Fish can be killed, giving you a bass to consume for Health. Do NOT kill any chickens you see running around; instead, wait for them to lay an egg, which you can take as an extra health item.
Crows can also be shot down from the sky, dropping random resources from ammo to gunpower. If there's a group of crows, use a Flash Grenade to take them all out in one fell swoop, and reap the rewards.
The Shooting Ranges may feel like an arcadey gimmick out of place in a serious survival game like RE4, but they are a nice breath of fresh air away from everything trying to kill you! Shooting Ranges become available from the Merchant during Chapter 3. Here, you can participate in fun shooting target mini-games with infinite bullets and different guns.
Train your aim and shoot the pirates to win big! You will earn silver and gold tokens to load into the nearby token vending machine if you perform well. You will receive cute, randomized performance-enhancing charms to clip onto your attache case. These provide benefits that can range from increasing Leon's base running speed to giving you discounts with the Merchant when repairing knives or body armor. They are well worth getting if you have a spare moment!
There are five Shooting Range locations, but they are always by the Merchant. There are Shooting Ranges in Chapters 3, 9, 11, 14, and 15.
We hope these tips and tricks will help you rescue Ashley and vanquish the Las Plagas from the Earth.
