League of Legends Arcane Season 2: Release Date & Characters

September 10, 2024

The three-year wait is almost over! The League of Legends-inspired series by Netflix, Arcane, is back for its final season in November 2024. Made famous by bringing two-dimensional characters to life and the legendary opening song "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons, fans are eagerly awaiting what could be in store for them in Arcane Season 2.

Last week, Netflix released a full two-minute teaser trailer for the cyberpunk animated series, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The story will continue to follow two estranged sisters, Vi and Jinx, as they navigate the ever-changing political landscapes of the two factions: the city of Piltover and the corrupt undercity of Zaun. Based on their choices in Season 1, the sisters have walked in opposing directions, finding themselves on two sides of a deadly fight.

Here's everything you need to know about Arcane Season 2, including the upcoming release date, returning characters, and potential story.

Arcane Season 2

When is Arcane Season 2 Coming Out?

On June 11, Netflix announced that Arcane would end with the second season. The series co-creator Christian Linke has said: "From the very beginning, since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of Arcane wraps up with the second season." He continued that Arcane is "the first of many stories [they] want to tell in Runeterra," meaning the League of Legends animated series' are likely not ending with Arcane and the conflict between Zaun and Plitover.

Linke also revealed the final season of Arcane premier date will be November 2024, three years since the first season was released on November 7, 2021. There will likely be nine episodes to match Season 1 to complete the Arcane saga, likely around 40 minutes per episode.

Netflix currently has a pattern of releasing their TV shows in several parts, like Emily in Paris or Bridgerton. It's unclear whether Arcane Season 2 will follow this same trajectory or be released altogether. Hopefully, more will be revealed during Netflix's Geeked Week live event on September 19, which has been confirmed to feature teasers and details for Arcane Season 2.

Arcane Season 2 Plot & Storylines

Arcane Season 1 ended with a bang, literally

The final episode of Arcane Season 1 was definitely explosive (not gonna lie), so Arcane Season 2 will primarily deal with the fallout from Jinx's attack on the Piltover council, just as they were voting to give Zaun independence. The tensions between the topside Piltovians and "undercity" Zaunites will come to a head as an all-out war between the two regions will ensue in this final season.

Based on the Arcane Season 2 trailer embedded below, we can assume that none of the council members have lived to tell the tale, thanks to Jinx's Super Mega Death Rocket at the end of Season 1. The possible casualties include Cassandra (Cailyn's mother), Jayce, and Mel (Jayce's partner and Ambessa Medarda's daughter), who are unlikely to have survived the blast and have not been confirmed as cast members for Season 2. Their deaths could serve as fuel for the fire as Caitlyn and Ambessa are gunning for Jinx's head, leaving Vi caught in the crossfire of her conflicting emotions.

In the trailer, you can also see Ambessa seemingly gearing up for war, going back on Jayce's promise of independence for the oppressed underground. This could potentially be to avenge her late daughter, Mel. Ambessa has also been confirmed to be the newest game champion to be released on League of Legends and Summoner's Rift later this year, so we could even see hints as to what her abilities and ultimate could be in the MOBA.

What Characters Will Be in Arcane Season 2?

Jinx vs. Vi in Season 2 of Arcane

Several main characters from Season 1 will return in Arcane Season 2, namely Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, Ekko, Heimerdinger, and Singed. Reoccurring characters like Jayce and Viktor have not yet been confirmed. However, seeing as they were in the council room when Jinx fired her Super Mega Death Rocket, we would be surprised if they survived the devastating hextech blast.

Here are some characters we should see in Arcane Season 2.

Jinx

Following the end of Season 1, Jinx (voiced by Ella Purnell) has become a symbol of hope for Zaun, the oppressed underground. Since she has ties to both Silco and Vander, the Zaunites will rally to her for guidance and to lead the rebellion against the topsiders living in Piltover.

While in Season 1, Jinx was caught between her two conflicting identities, she has now firmly established herself as Jinx after the death of Silco and Vi choosing Caitlyn over her.

Vi

While the trailer has confirmed that Vi and Caitlyn will work together to locate and capture Jinx with the other Piltover Enforcers, Caitlyn's quest for vengeance (likely to avenge her mother) will put her at odds with Vi. Although in the teaser trailer, Vi says, "my sister is gone," it makes sense that Vi may still be conflicted with where her allegiances lie, especially if she still gets glimpses of Powder beneath Jinx's ruthless exterior.

Will she aid Caitlyn and bring Jinx to justice, or will she protect her sister at the cost of her allegiances and morals? One thing is for sure, we will definitely see Vi and Jinx come to blows to round out this final season of Arcane.

Warwick sneak peak with Singed

Singed and Warwick

In January, an early teaser was released for LoL Arcane. It shows Singed, the ex-alchemist specializing in immoral shimmer experimentations, performing a blood/chemtech transfusion. As he checks his pocketwatch, the camera pans to a gigantic creature looming above him. While it's just a fan theory at this stage, our best guess is that this beast is Vander from Season 1, aka Jinx and Vi's adoptive father.

Based on actual dialogue from LoL, Warwick somehow knows Vi and Jinx. His League of Legends biography on the Riot Games website also says, "Warwick struggled to recall a single memory from his past... All he could see was blood. But then he heard a little girl screaming. Screaming something he couldn't understand. It sounded like a name." This perfectly describes the end of Arcane Season 1, Episode 3, as Powder was screaming "Violet!" while Vander bled to death behind her.

We can assume after his near-death experience with the transformative drug "Shimmer," Singed has "saved" Vander, transforming him into the bloodthirsty undead werewolf, Warwick. What are Singed's plans with Warwick? It will be interesting to find out.

Caitlyn

In the Arcane Season 2 official teaser trailer, Caitlyn (voiced by Katie Leung) is pictured on-screen with a voiceover from Ambessa saying "you will have justice," implying her mother did not survive Jinx's attack on the council.

Caitlyn also seems to have become a figure of authority as the new Sheriff of Piltover, leading a strike team into Zaun with three main objectives: to locate Jinx, dismantle Shimmer operations, and neutralize any agents still loyal to Silco. Her quest for revenge and justice may cause conflict between her and Vi and put a dampener on their budding relationship.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, all the loose threads from Arcane Season 1 will be wrapped up in Season 2; what are Ekko and Heimerdinger doing? Who will win in a battle between Jinx and Vi? Did Viktor survive, and if so, will he transform into the champion we know from LoL?
