The League of Legends World Championship, aka LoL Worlds, is the absolute pinnacle of the LoL professional ecosystem, bringing legions of fans to witness history in the making. LoL Worlds is an S-Tier competition set after the culmination of the regular season to bring the year to a close.

This year, LoL Worlds is bringing the action to South Korea as 22 of the best LoL teams will battle it out for the title of World Champion, the Summoner's Cup, and a hefty sum from the $2.25 million prize pool. Will DRX make it two years in a row, or will T1 regain their crown? Only time will tell.

The stage is set as the 13th edition of the League of Legends World Championship draws closer, beginning on October 10! Read on for the competition format, schedule, the team's competing, and how to watch!

LoL Worlds 2023: Format

The format for LoL Worlds can be complex for the uninitiated. Riot Games has changed the format, especially for the 2023 edition.

Take a look below for the complete format for the League of Legends World Championship 2023, consisting of three main stages.

Play-Ins Stage

Round 1

  • Eight teams are split into two double-elimination groups.
  • The top two teams (four in total) advance to the Play-In Stage Round 2.
  • All head-to-head matches are Bo3.

Round 2

  • The upper bracket winner faces off against the loser bracket winner from the other group.
  • Both matches are Bo5. The winners advance to the Group Stage.

Swiss Stage

  • Sixteen teams compete in a five-round Swiss Stage.
  • In the first stage, teams are randomly paired with an opponent from a different regional leagues. After this, teams compete against others with similar win/loss records.
  • Teams that win three matches progress to the playoffs, while teams that lose three matches are eliminated.
  • Progression and elimination matches are Bo3. Remaining matches are Bo1.

Playoffs/Knockout Stage

  • The playoffs, or knockouts, consist of the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals.
  • Eight teams will compete in an intense single-elimination bracket.
  • All matches are Bo5.

LoL Worlds 2023: Competing Teams

The League of Legends World Championship is the biggest event in the professional LoL circuit. As such, the best teams from across the globe will be competing to secure the lion's share of the prize money and the all-important Summoner's Cup to emerge as the World Champion!

22 teams will be competing, all from the different international leagues. Some qualified teams come from the main leagues LCK, LPL, LCS, and LEC, and advance straight to the Swiss Stage. The eight Play-In Stage Teams come from the remaining leagues: VCS, PCS, CBLOL, LLA, and the Worlds Qualifying Series will give a Play-In slot to a team from either LCS or LEC.

South Korea will play host to LoL Worlds this year, at four different venues in South Korea. The entire LoL Worlds 2023 format is below, alongside each location.

Play-Ins : October 10 - 15 (LoL Park, Seoul)

Swiss Stage: October 19 - 29 (KBS Arena, Seoul)

Quarterfinals: November 2 - 5 (Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Busan)

Semifinals: November 11 - 12 (Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Busan)

Grand Finals: November 19 (Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul)

LoL Worlds 2023: Schedule

This year's League of Legends World Championship is taking place later than usual to accommodate players participating in the esports events at the Asian Games

As such, LoL Worlds 2023 will officially commence on October 10, running until November 19. There will also be a Worlds Qualifying Series (WQS) Bo5 match on October 9 to determine the final Play-In slot.
